The History of On Deck

During the late 19th century, Port Arthur was rife with saloons. In fact, there was one emporium for every twenty five residents. On Deck is the only establishment from those days to have survived, leaving it the communities oldest beverage parlour.

Originally known as the "Western house" the bar was housed in a one story frame building which was removed from the site to make way for the construction of the original core structure in 1887.

In 1927 the buisness changed hands and became known as the Waverly Hotel. In the late 1950's the Waverly Hotel completed a 50' X 50' addition with a second floor above. This increased the seating capacity by 169 people. The Waverly Hotel offered many diverse and sometimes exotic forms of entertainment. Ultimately the Waverly closed for financial reasons in October of 1991.

In May 1992, the building was acquired by Sandy Sellers. On November 9th of 1992, Sandford's On Deck Sports Bar and Restaurant opened a renovated premises featuring a new full service kitchen. Over the next couple of years the restaurant expanded and now offers four pool tables, three foosball tables, a juke box and ten 80 inch LED HDTVs and a large Dart area. It is now 2016 and things just keep getting better and better.
